Hello color! Nanette Lepore debuted her vibrant L’Amour collection for JC Penney in New York City last night (January 24) to a bevvy of pleased partygoers.
Celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Shay Mitchell turned up for the event looking gorgeous in pieces from Lepore’s collection.
We caught up with the Hollywood A-listers along with Lepore and her 14-year-old daughter Violet who she calls the inspiration behind the lineup, to talk all things fashion. Here’s what the stylistas had to say:
DIY Fashion: How does this line reflect your daughter’s personality?
NL "She’s casual, cool and has this elegant, yet very offhanded way of getting dressed. Ever since she was young she had this fabulous way of mixing things up which I always loved."
DIY: Is there a message you want to send teens with this unique collection?
NL: "Teenagers should have fun [with fashion]. I think they should explore their personalities, and not let their [peers] tell them what to wear. I used to wear the craziest things to school and I took so much grief for it. I just want kids to feel free and express themselves though getting dressed."
DIY: How does it feel being the muse behind a clothing collection?
VL: "It’s nice and flattering! I’m excited to have a line that I know I’m going to like everything from."
DIY: What's your favorite piece from the line?
VL: "I love everything, especially the printed jeans."
DIY: Are you considering following in mom's footsteps as a fashion designer?
VL: "I'm thinking about it! I'm not really sure of what I want to do yet. Definitely something in fashion though."
DIY: On a scale from 1 to 10, how do you think mom did?
VL: "I'd give her a 9.9. I'm kidding! I give her a 10."
DIY: What do you love about the L'Amour line?
VH: "It's really great stuff! And the fact that it's all affordable and by Nanette Lepore is so cool! If I was 13 or 14 I would be rocking this so hard. It's beautiful stuff and fun and easy to wear."
DIY: How has your style evolved?
VH: "It changes every day. It depends on what kind of music I'm listening to and where I am in the world — I’m inspired by so many different things. I'm a very extreme person so I tend to dress in themes."
DIY: We hear you’re thinking of starting a fashion line — what’s the status of that project?
VH: "I got myself a sewing machine and am working on it in my spare time. I'm taking it step by step. I want it to be personal and perfect."
DIY: What's your go-to item in your closet?
VH: "My leather jacket. I wear it every day."
DIY: Who are your style icons?
VH: "I love the classics like Kate Moss and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. I like grungy, bohemian styles."
DIY: How was filming "Spring Breakers?"
VH: “[Writer/Director] Harmony [Korine] creates an environment for you to just live in. You are those people, and you’re living in that situation and you get to see what we do with it… The girls are amazing. I love them. It was a very new experience working with Harmony and doing a movie like that. It was tough, it wasn’t just all fun. It was hard work but, it looks like it was a lot of fun. That’s what counts.”
DIY: What do you think of the new line?
SM: "[It's] amazing. I love it. It's big, it's bright, it's fun. It was hard to choose what I wanted to wear tonight!"
DIY: Are you doing anything for Valentine's Day?
SM: “I just love [getting] flowers out of the blue. I think that’s something that’s so cool. Valentine’s Day is awesome. It’s great, but I love Monday flowers just because.”
