Just as with everything else in our wardrobe, a handbag should be chosen based on the day’s happenings.

A crossbody bag wouldn’t be practical for a busy day at the office, and a large tote would make for a major headache while at a crowded restaurant on date night.

To ensure you bring the appropriate amount of baggage (the good kind) with you on any occasion, we rounded up the most common activates and paired each with the proper purse. You’re welcome.

For the Office: We suggest sticking to sleek, tailored styles. We love the shape of the Refined Envelope Satchel for our 9-to-5 grind, as it’s big enough to stick important documents in for lunch meetings, yet trendy enough to impress the fashion-savvy CEO.

For a Luncheon: When going on a lunch date with the gals, you’re going to want to tote some serious eye candy. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make your BFFs a little jealous of your new bag, is there? We love the sophisticated nature of this dark green option from H&M. The color is perfect for fall, and the hardware detailing makes this baby look like it costs a fortune.

For Date Night: We’re going to go out on a limb here and assume you rock a sexy LBD on date night with your main squeeze. That being said, make your outfit pop with a bold clutch. We love this one from Dorothy Perkins for its electric hue and metal accents. Be sure to carry one that suits your content needs. Think, "Is it big enough to hold my phone, compact powder, lipstick, etc …?"

For Daily Use: Invest in a carry all that’s comfortable and practical to carry everywhere. Old Navy’s Tassel Zip Tote is fabulous. It’s very roomy, boasts a beautiful burgundy hue, and has an adorable tassel detail — one of the hottest embellishments of the season.

For a Shopping Trip: You’re going to need both hands available to shop those sale racks, honey! Slip on a crossbody — like this one from Topshop — to ensure you’re limbs are ready to sift through any two-for-one deals. Since it sits close to your body, this option will ensure your cash and other belongings stay safe throughout your entire retail romp.

For a Concert w/ BFFs: Who has time to carry a purse at a concert? Not us — which is why we’re big fans of backpacks. The hands-free carryall can stash everything we’ll need for a music-filled night out, and will sit tight while we get our groove on. How cute is this option from Macy’s? Obsessed with the rocker-chic studded detailing!
