Conservative Couture: Alexander Wang's Debut Balenciaga Campaign

Alexander Wang has big shoes to fill as Balenciaga’s creative director, and by the looks of his new ad campaign, he’s playing it on the conservative side.
In an image obtained by WWD, photographer Steven Klein captured model Kristen McMenamy in clenched fists wearing an elegant skirt and jacket combination — the first look Wang debuted down the Fall 2013 runway. Because you can’t see the model’s face, the viewer’s attention is focused on the simplicity and texture of the designs, along with the unavoidable emotion projecting from the back-turned stance.
Wang described the style as a “very cinematic portrayal” of his collection, and praised Klein and McMemany for their ability to transcend the scene. “[They] were the perfect team to illustrate this idea,” he said.
The Balenciaga ad campaign will be featured in magazines this June, and it’s clear we can expect much more from the young designer.
