Christian Louboutin Talks YSL Suit, Defends His Right to Red Bottoms

Christian Louboutin is once again speaking out on the matter of his shoe brand's on-going legal battle with YSL - the label he blames for copying his iconic red bottoms.

"I find it most incredible that a group like PPR [who offered to buy the Louboutin brand numerous times in the past] would take the risk of defending itself as a plagiarist. They claim to fight against counterfeiting and plagiarism of which they are victims and yet behave like this," the designer told press.

It all started back in April when YSL incorporated a red sole into their design scheme, disregarding that Louboutin trademarked the look back in 2008.

And while Christian says he's not trying copyright an entire hue, he is trying to protect something he believes his company made so recognizable.

"It is a red in a specific context [in the way that], there is Ferrari red [and] Hermès orange. Even in the food industry, Cadbury recently won a lawsuit against Nestlé for using purple packaging. All this proves that the colours play a part in a brand's identity. I'm not saying that red usually belongs to me - I repeat that this is about a precise red, used in a precise location." he explained to French publication "Libération."

This highly drawn out lawsuit has proven to be very hard for Louboutin, as he, PPR CEO François-Henri Pinault and Yves Saint Laurent were all, at one time, in close working and personal relationships.
