Out with the old, and in with the new! We want 2013 to be a year of fresh beginnings and optimal organization, and we’re starting with our wardrobe.
To help other stylistas, like us, whip their closet space, shopping budget and overall wardrobe into shape, we’ve drummed up a list of 6 resolutions to actually stick to this year.
Think you're up for the challenge?
Clean out your closet. Our general rule of thumb is: If you haven’t worn it for a year, then it’s time to part ways. No ifs, ands, or buts — just get rid of it! An easy way to sort through the chaos is to create three piles; one to keep, one to donate, and one to swap with your girlfriends. Go through each one of your pieces and place them in one of these three locations.
Host a Swap Party. Gather a group of your closest gal pals (or some acquaintances that dress really, really well), and have everyone bring a bag of clothing, shoes and/or accessories they’d like to swap. These items should be gently used and still in style. Then, put everything in the middle, grab a glass of wine and start shopping!
Stick to a budget. Being fiscally responsible is important, and something you should strive towards in the new year. If you’re working within a fixed income, let it be known that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to look like a fashionista! The season’s hottest trends are attainable in a slew of price ranges, meaning (if you’re a smart shopper) you’ll be sure to find everything you need to look picture-perfect, without stressing out your pocketbook.
Be a smart shopper. Don’t buy something just because it’s adorable, or on sale, or because you think you’ll wear it someday. This frame of mind will land you nothing but a closet full of items with the tags still attached. When you’re in the dressing room, try to picture where you’ll don this new piece — maybe to your BFF’s upcoming engagement party? To the office perhaps? Also, envision the items you already own, and try to piece together a couple outfits in your mind to test the versatility of these new threads.
Invest in staples. No wardrobe is complete without a solid foundation of staples. Before you go spending your hard-earned green on pieces boasting trends of the moment, opt for items that will prove timeless in your arsenal of goods. Here’s what you should have:
- Black trousers
- A little black dress
- Black pumps
- Nude pumps
- A white blouse
- A neutral-colored day dress
- A tailored blazer
- Neutral-toned ballet flats
- A plain white tee
- A leather jacket
- Dark-wash denim jeans
- A trench coat
Dress to flatter your body. When it comes to certain trends, some are better seen — not worn. Especially when it comes to body type; many women are more concerned with looking stylish, rather than dressing to flatter their figure. So, in this new year, we urge you to be body conscious. Dress to complement your best assets and remember that it’s not the clothes that make the woman, it’s her attitude and confidence!
