It’s no secret that Botox helps ladies and gentlemen upgrade their appearance, but now it seems the cosmetic drug may also have emotional benefits.
According to the Journal of Psychiatric Research, the botulinum toxin has been shown to aid patients with major depression issues, even those who weren’t helped by traditional medications.
Dr. M. Axel Wollmer believes Botox “interrupts feedback from the facial musculature to the brain, which may be involved in the development and maintenance of negative emotions.”
The study was conducted by giving patients five injections each (half with Botox and half with a placebo) for sixteen weeks. At the end, the Botox-treated group reported a 47% decrease in depressive symptoms versus a 9% reduction in the placebo patients.
